Description
Asking appropriate questions and learning how to find the information that correctly answers those questions is an important part of reading comprehension. Questions words are a key component to helping readers engage with the text and identify key information while gauging their understanding of what they are reading.
This product contains visuals for display and games for practice and application so students can learn and understand how to ask and answer questions words based on their reading.
The following question words are included: who, what, when, where, how, why
This product includes the following:
- Question Words Posters- There are six half-sheet-size posters that detail the individual question words and provide examples of how they may be used. Also included is a full sheet-size poster containing all the question words.
- Question Words Story- This short story provides an opportunity for teachers to model and guide practice in using question words and identifying key information in the text to answer questions that are asked. The teacher reads the short story aloud and asks the appropriate question words to monitor student comprehension. These questions may be cut up and distributed to students before the story is read so they know what information to look for in answering their question.
- Question Words Games (similar to “I have…Who has…”)
- Game #1: Question Words Definition- The 8 cards in this game help students identify the meaning behind each question word. Teacher distributes the cards, and students take turns reading the cards in order, beginning with the “Start” card and ending with the “Finish” card. The “Start” card asks the question “Who has the question word for a person?” The person with “Who” (which is the answer to the “Start card” question) reads their card, which says “I have Who. Who has the question word for an objection, idea, or action?” The student holding the “What” card (which is the answer to the “Who card” question) would then read his/her card. Students continue in this fashion until all the question word definition cards are read. This is a great 1 to 2-minute time-filler game and can be used as a timed activity where students try to beat their time and get faster at identifying the definition of each question word.
- Game #2: Questions Words Application- This game consists of 26 cards and is similar to Game #1 except it applies the question words by asking various kinds of questions. The student with the “Start card” reads the question on his/her card (“Who likes to play soccer?”). The student with the answer to that question (the card that says “My brother likes to play soccer”) reads his/her card and the next question at the bottom of that card. The student who has the appropriate answer to this question reads his/her card and asks the next question. Students continue in this fashion until all the question word cards have been read and answered. This is a great 3 to 4-minute time-filler activity and may be used as a timed activity where students practice correctly asking and answering questions.
- Question Words Game: Editable Template- this template allows teachers to create their own questions for a question word game.
