Description

Mastering the letter-sound connection is an essential part of becoming a fluent reader. This letter-sound connection is solidified through reading (verbalizing sounds from the printed letters) and writing (writing the letters from the verbalized sounds).

The auditory dictation portion of an Orton-Gillingham lesson provides students with the opportunity to listen to the sounds given and then attach the correct letters to those sounds in writing. These two resources provide a guide for students as they go through the process of spelling words and writing sentences during this part of the lesson.

COPS Procedure Poster/Cards

  • This document helps students develop a systematic process for proofreading their sentences during the auditory portion of the OG lesson. The acronym “COPS” stands for Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling. The resource comes in two sizes: an 8-1/2” x 11” poster-size for display and appx. 3.1/4” x 4” personal-card sizes (6 to a page) for students to keep. Both sizes come in color and in black and white.

SOS Procedure Poster

  • “SOS” is an acronym for Simultaneous Oral Spelling. During the auditory portion of the OG lesson (when words are dictated to students and they write them down), this method combines the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-tactile senses to help solidify letter-sound connections. This document is a visual aid that helps students remember the SOS procedure and comes in two sizes: an 8-1/2” x 11” poster-size for display and appx. 3-1/4” x 4” personal-card sizes (6 to a page) for students to keep.

Finger Tapping Procedure Poster

  • · Finger tapping is a kinesthetic-tactile sense often used in multisensory reading instruction. This method operates as a “magic pill” for many students who struggle to sound out words because it provides a tactile sense to help the brain solidify letter-sound connections. This visual aid helps students learn how to finger tap the different sounds in words. It comes in two sizes: 8 ½” x 11” for display and 3” x 5” cards for students to keep. Both sizes come in color and black and white.
