Description

Learning syllable division rules is an essential part of decoding multisyllable words. This VCCV Syllable Division Phonics Focus Pack from the Multisensory Classroom includes everything you need to plan your VCCV syllable division Orton-Gillingham lesson. Each pack includes multisensory activities that are designed to follow the sequence of an Orton-Gillingham lesson, applying reading and spelling instruction in a structured and cumulative sequence to ensure student understanding and application of this new skill.

All products in The Multisensory Classroom, including the TMC Phonics Focus Pack series resources, are designed to follow Orton Gillingham-based instruction, and are derived from my Orton Gillingham Academy-accredited training and my doctoral dissertation research implementing Orton Gillingham in the classroom.

This resource includes the following:

  1. Lesson Plan– This detailed lesson plan lays out from beginning to end how to introduce and teach the concept of VCCV syllable division and explains how and when to use each product resource during the lesson.
  2. Worksheet
  • Word Divide- students code each word and divide it into syllables.
  1. Posters- Two sets of posters (8 ½ x 11) can be used for classroom display to introduce and practice the skill. All posters come in color and black and white.
  • VC-CV Syllable Division Rules Poster– This poster explains the rules dividing VC-CV words and provides examples.
  • Finger Tapping Poster- This poster provides a specific guideline for finger tapping VC-CV words during reading and spelling.
  1. Activities-
  • VCCV Interactive notebook pages- Three activities are included in this product along with a helpful “Overview and Answer Key page”:
  1. Flip-up activity– Students cut out, glue on the notebook, and write the rule and an example word underneath each page.
  2. “Yes” or “No” pocket activity– Students cut out the words and decide if they are divided correctly. Words divided correctly are placed in the “yes” pocket and words divided incorrectly are placed in the “no” pocket.
  3. Cut, match, and paste activity– Students cut out each syllable, match them together to form words, and glue them onto the VCCV chart along with the pictures that go with each word.
  • Syllable Division Exit Tickets. These exit tickets are a quick and easy follow-up assessment to help determine if a student understands the VCCV syllable division pattern. They are perfect to use in the classroom after the lesson or at the end of a tutoring session.
  • Write and Divide- Students code the word cards, write words on the “Write and Divide” sheet, and separate words into their individual syllables.
  • Scoop. Divide. Cover.- Students scoop each word into syllables, re-write each word by dividing into two syllables, then cover the word and try to write it from memory.
  • Beat the Clock. Once students learn how to divide and decode multisyllable words, they can begin to work on increasing their reading rate of these words. In this activity, students practice reading through a list of words while being timed. Each time they read through the list, they try to beat their previous time. Teacher record forms and data tracking sheets are also included.
  1. Word Cards- There are 67 VCCV syllable division word cards included (real and nonsense words) so the lessons can be more individualized to focus on specific words.

  2. Words Lists and Sentences Pages
  • Flexible Word Lists (includes one page of real words and one page of nonsense words)
    • Real & nonsense word lists that are flexible for students who may be stronger readers and can decode words with phonograms not yet covered in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence (if using that along with this product).
  • Aligned Words and Sentences Lists (includes real and nonsense words)
    • One page of words and sentences that, with the exception of a few sight words, is completely aligned with and only contains phonograms/skills that have already been taught in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence (which is OG-based).
  1. Decodable Passage and Comprehension Worksheet
  • Includes a unique decodable passage containing VCCV syllable division words for students to practice reading in connected texts. This passage is highly decodable with a few sight words to review prior to reading.
  • A comprehension worksheet is also included with short-answer questions to assess understanding of the passage, a phonics review of VC-CV words, and a sentence illustration practice for students to visualize the text.
