Description

Orton Gillingham (OG) is a very effective, multisensory approach to teaching reading and spelling where each step is taught using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile components. However, getting started with OG in a classroom or in tutoring can be a bit overwhelming. What goes into a lesson? How do you organize a lesson? How do you identify a student’s instructional needs to know where to begin? In what order do skills need to be learned?

This quick-start pack answers all those questions and provides everything you need to start implementing a solid Orton Gillingham program in your classroom or tutoring business.

The following resources are included in this quick-start pack:

  1. Table of Contents and Dividers- Attractive and color-coordinated table of contents and divider pages make it easy to keep all your Orton Gillingham resources organized in one notebook.
  • The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence- This scope and sequence includes all spelling and reading (phonics) skills from kindergarten to 2nd grade. These skills can also be used for remedial instruction for students all the way through 12th grade. Because Orton Gillingham is a method and not a curriculum, there is no standard order of skills that must be taught to students. The logical order and progression of the skills as presented in this scope and sequence is generally consistent with other highly recommended OG and phonics-based reading curricula although variations do exist from these other programs. These variations are intentional and are a result of decades of practical experience working with students, my own personal doctoral dissertation research in multisensory reading instruction, and input by Orton Gillingham-Certified Fellows. This resource comes in both color and black and white.
  • OG Diagnostic Spelling Test Score Sheet & Student Answer Sheets- This diagnostic spelling test assesses the student’s ability to correctly identify and spell phonograms in the order they are covered in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence. Includes answer sheets for students to keep their words organized and to make it easier to evaluate their answers. The score sheet comes in both color and black and white.
  • OG Diagnostic Word Attack Test Score Sheet & Student Reading List- This diagnostic word attack test assesses the student’s ability to correctly identify and read phonograms in the order they are covered in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence. Students are given a word list to read from and the teacher has a score sheet in which to evaluate student answers. The score sheet comes in both color and black and white.
  • Instructions for OG Diagnostic Word Attack Test and Diagnostic Spelling Test- This resource provides detailed instructions for the two diagnostic tests provided in this pack. The results of these tests are used to identify at what step in the scope and sequence to start instruction for a student. This resource comes in both color and black and white.
  • 2 Orton Gillingham Lesson Plan Packages- both packages provide the following products and are slightly varied depending on educator’s expertise with OG and the elements of OG lessons needed to focus on for the student(s).
  • Guide- These 6-page documents provide a detailed explanation of each step in an OG lesson. The first two pages provide an OG lesson overview and a “steps at a glance” chart for a typical lesson. The remaining pages explain each step in detail and provide suggestions for additional multisensory instruction for students who may need it.
  • Orton Gillingham Lesson Plan Preview- This preview version of an OG lesson plan provides a step-by- step guide with examples of what to put in an OG lesson.
  • Orton Gillingham Lesson Plan Template- These OG lesson plan templates are set up for the teacher to customize with the specific reading/spelling skills that a student (or students) needs for each lesson. This template directly correlates with the OG Lesson Plan Guide and includes an editable version.
  • Auditory (Dictation) Student Response Sheets- These student response sheets correlate directly with each lesson plan’s steps.  It provides an organized space for students to write their answers during the auditory part of the lesson; it also includes a filled-in “preview” version with explanations so you can see exactly how the templates correlate to the lesson plan.
  • Reading (Visual) Student Pages- These pages also correlate directly with each lesson plan’s steps. It provides an organized space for the teacher to write words and sentences for the student to read during the visual part of the lesson. It also includes a filled-in “preview” version with explanations so you can see exactly how the templates correlate to the lesson. This is also completely editable in PowerPoint.
  • BONUS Lesson Plan Template: This product also contains a bonus lesson plan template and student pages that include space for tapping out words. Includes editable versions in PowerPoint.
  • Warm-up Activities
  • Handwriting- This 4-page resource provides a variety of handwriting activities that can and should be done as warm-up activities at the beginning of an OG lesson. These exercises are diagnostic and prescriptive in nature. Students are assessed and instructed on correct pencil grip, letter formation, letter size and spacing, and word spacing. These skills are also referred to in the Lesson Plan Guide (check out the product preview for where in the lesson this is taught).
  • Phonological Awareness: An Overview- This resource explains all the skills involved in phonological awareness as well as how it relates to phonemic awareness. The resource also provides a number of phonological awareness activities to use during OG lessons.
  • Additional Lesson Activity Resources for Use within an OG Lesson-
  • SOS Procedure Poster: “SOS” is an acronym for Simultaneous Oral Spelling. During the auditory portion of the OG lesson (when words are dictated to students and they write them down), this method combines multiple senses (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-tactile) to help solidify letter-sound connections. This visual aid helps students remember the SOS procedure. It comes in two sizes: 8.5″ x 11″ for display and 3″ x 5″ cards for students to keep.
  • COPS Procedure Poster/Cards: This resource is great for use as a sentence proofreading check during the auditory portion of the OG lesson. The acronym “COPS” stands for Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling. The resource comes in two sizes: 8.5″ x 11″ for display and 3″ x 5″ cards for students to keep. Both sizes come in color and black and white.
  • Finger Tapping Poster: Finger tapping is a kinesthetic-tactile sense often used in multisensory reading instruction. This method operates as a “magic pill” for many students who struggle to sound out words because it provides a tactile sense to help the brain solidify letter-sound connections. This visual aid helps students learn how to finger tap the different sounds in words. It comes in two sizes: 8.5″ x 11″ for display and 3″ x 5″ cards for students to keep. Both sizes come in color and black and white.
  • Cues for Vowel Sounds- This poster provides visual and auditory cues that can be displayed or given to students who struggle with their short vowel sounds. These cues are very effective in helping students during lessons without interrupting their train of thought.
  • Word List- This 21-page resource contains an exhaustive list of words (real and nonsense words) for each step and sub-step of the scope and sequence. The words in each step build upon the concepts taught in previous steps, allowing for systematic review of the phonograms and skills covered in the scope and sequence.
  • Words and Sentences- This 250+-page resource contains a comprehensive list of words for each sub-step of The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence. The words in each step build upon the concepts taught in previous steps, allowing for systematic review of the phonograms and skills covered in the scope and sequence. Includes one list of real words and one list of nonsense words. These lists include all the words that are in the decodable word lists and many more! Also includes several fluency sentences for each sub-step to help the students apply their knowledge of newly introduced words to connected text. Each sentence only contains concepts that have been introduced or previously taught and a few sight words (which are listed at the bottom of the page).
