This informal reading inventory helps determine an entering-first grader’s pre-reading and early reading abilities. The inventory takes less than 20 minutes to administer, and it covers the skills necessary for a successful start in first-grade reading.

The following skills are assessed in this first-grade informal reading inventory:

  1. Phonological Awareness: letter and sound knowledge
  2. Phonemic Awareness: blending individual phonemes and isolating individual initial, middle, and final phonemes 
  3. Phonics: decoding words
  4. Orthographic Awareness: spelling words
  5. Sight Word Knowledge: Dolch sight words (highest-frequency pre-primer and primer words are used)
  6. Oral Reading Fluency: sentences
  7. Oral Reading Fluency and Comprehension: short story
  8. Silent Reading Comprehension: short story
