First Grade Informal Reading Inventory
This informal reading inventory helps determine an entering-first grader’s pre-reading and early reading abilities. The inventory takes less than 20 minutes to administer, and it covers the skills necessary for a successful start in first-grade reading.

The following skills are assessed in this first-grade informal reading inventory:
- Phonological Awareness: letter and sound knowledge
- Phonemic Awareness: blending individual phonemes and isolating individual initial, middle, and final phonemes
- Phonics: decoding words
- Orthographic Awareness: spelling words
- Sight Word Knowledge: Dolch sight words (highest-frequency pre-primer and primer words are used)
- Oral Reading Fluency: sentences
- Oral Reading Fluency and Comprehension: short story
- Silent Reading Comprehension: short story
