Description

Learning how to add suffixes to words can be tricky for young children. Because suffix -ed can make three different sounds (/ed/, /d/, /t/), it is important to teach children one sound at a time, starting with suffix -ed as /ed/. This Suffix ed as /ed/ Phonics Focus Pack from the Multisensory Classroom product provides a detailed lesson plan as well as a variety of word lists, word cards, posters, worksheets, and activities to help your students better grasp this skill.

All products in The Multisensory Classroom, including the TMC Phonics Focus Pack series resources, are designed to follow Orton Gillingham-based instruction, and are derived from my Orton Gillingham Academy-accredited training and my doctoral dissertation research implementing Orton Gillingham in the classroom.

This resource includes the following:

  1. Lesson Plan– This detailed lesson plan lays out from beginning to end how to introduce and teach the concept of suffix -ed as /ed/ and explains how and when to use each product resource during the lesson.
  2. Worksheets- Each set of worksheets includes a page of long-vowel words and a page of short-vowel words.
  • Fill-in- Students color the “t” or “d” in each base word that makes the suffix -ed say the /ed/ sound and choose the correct word to complete the sentences.
  • Suffix -ed Review- This worksheet helps the teacher see if the students understand the suffix -ed rules. Students underline the suffix -ed in each word and write in the box the last letter from the base word that causes the suffix -ed to make the /ed/ sound.
  • Answer Key- Includes a thumbnail of all answer keys for each worksheet on one page.
  1. Posters- Three sets of posters (8 ½ x 11) can be used for classroom display to introduce and practice the skill. All posters come in color and black and white.
  • Phonogram Posters– These are perfect for classroom display to introduce the suffix -ed as /ed/, a coordinating picture, and the sound it makes.
  • Suffix -ed Rules Poster– This poster explains the rules for determining the sounds that suffix -ed makes and provides examples.
  • Finger Tapping Poster- This poster provides a specific guideline for how to finger tap words with suffix -ed during reading and spelling.
  1. Activities- Includes a page of long-vowel words and a page of short-vowel words.
  • Puzzles- students connect puzzles with words containing the same -ed ending sounds.
  1. Word Cards- There are 36 suffix -ed as /ed/ word cards included (real and nonsense words) so the lessons can be more individualized to focus on specific words.

  2. Words Lists and Sentences Pages
  • Flexible Word Lists (includes one page of real words and one page of nonsense words)
    • All real & nonsense word lists are flexible for students who may be stronger readers and can decode words with phonograms not yet covered in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence (if using that along with this product).
  • Aligned Words and Sentences Lists (includes real and nonsense words)
    • One page of words and sentences that, with the exception of a few sight words, is completely aligned with and only contains phonograms/skills that have already been taught in The Multisensory Classroom Scope and Sequence (which is OG-based).
  1. Decodable Passage and Comprehension Worksheet
  • Includes a unique decodable passage containing suffix -ed as /ed/ words for students to practice reading these words in connected texts. This passage is highly decodable with a few sight words to review prior to reading.
  • A Comprehension Worksheet is also included with short-answer questions to assess understanding of the passage, a phonics review of suffix -ed as /ed/ words, and a sentence illustration practice for students to visualize the text.
