Syllable Division Interactive Notebooks

Description

If your students are having difficulty decoding multi-syllable words, teaching syllable division will help them learn how to break those larger words into smaller, more manageable parts and then sound them out.

These syllable division interactive pages are a fun way to practice and reinforce syllable division concepts. Each syllable division rule contains 3-4 activities, a set of mini-posters, an overview (with complete directions for each activity) and answer key page, and a how-to video for every activity within each notebook.

Each activity comes in color and in black and white.

The following activities are included in the syllable division interactive notebooks:

  1. Flip-up activities- Students cut out, glue on the notebook, and write the rule and an example word underneath each page.
  2. “Yes” or “No” pocket activity- Students cut out the words and decide if they are divided correctly. Words divided correctly are placed in the “yes” pocket and words not divided correctly are placed in the “no” pocket.
  3. Matching pocket activity- Students cut out words, divide them into syllables, and choose into which syllable division pocket they go.
  4. Cut, match, and paste activity- Students cut out each syllable, match them together to form words, and glue them onto the correct syllable division chart along with the pictures that go with each word.
  5. Foldable Activity- Students cut out pictures with words, fold the left and right sides into the center, and glue into the notebook. They then write the picture word with one syllable on each fold.
  6. Code and Sort Activity- Students cut out and glue the chart into the notebook, code each of the provided words (identify the syllable division rule), draw lines to divide each word, and sort the words on the chart according to how the word is divided.
  7. Syllable Puzzle Activity- Students highlight the syllable division word in each sentence and write each syllable of the word on the two bottom puzzle pieces. They then glue the puzzle pieces together into the notebook.
  8. VCV or VCCV Activity- Students decide which syllable division rule applies to the words on the chart, color according to the directions, and then cut out and glue the chart into the notebook. From the colored words, students choose and write three more words from the same syllable division rule on the other pages and glue these into the notebook. They then draw a picture of each word under the flaps.
  9. Code and Divide Activity- Students code the words and color the vowels and consonants in each syllable (red for vowels and green for consonants), decide where words should be divided, cut words in half by syllable, and glue each part of the word on the correct syllable division chart.
  10. Find, Circle, and Write Activity- Students read the story, circle the syllable division words, and write the words in the blanks on the chart.
  11. Foldable Activity– Students cut out each of the foldables and fold the outer picture flaps inward on the dotted line. They glue the back of the center section in the notebook and write the words for each picture under the picture flap.
  12. Draw and Write Activity– Students read the sentence and underline the consonant-le word. They will then write the word on the top flap, draw a line to divide the word before the consonant -le, code the word by writing the syllable division rule underneath the correct letters, and draw a picture of the word as it is used in the sentence.
  13. Bubble Flaps Activity– Students cut out bubble flaps and glue the top part of each speech bubble into the notebook. They decide whether the red vowels (in the color version) or the underlined vowels (in the black and white version) are acting as a vowel team or are two separate sounds. They write the syllable division rule under the bubble flaps.
  14. Flip Book Activity– Students create a mini flip book and choose two pictures that make a word to glue on the outside of each of the flaps. They open the flaps, write the word on the inside, and draw a picture of it in the frame.
  15. Interlocking Trifold Activity– Students cut out and glue trifolds into the interactive notebook. Each trifold has a word and its picture on the inside. The students fold the flaps over the picture/word and write the first part of the word on the first flap and the second part of the word on the second flap.
  16. Story Activity– Students cut out the story along the dotted lines and glue into the interactive notebook. They read the story and circle or highlight the six words that are part of the focused syllable division rule and write the words in the notebook below the story, making sure to draw a line to separate the individual syllables within the word.
