Knowing how to help students who constantly struggle with short vowel sounds despite direct instruction can be difficult. Sometimes students need repeated exposure to these sounds using multisensory strategies.
These short vowel sound cues use multisensory strategies by providing visual signals for students when they are reading (because reading is in the visual modality) and auditory signals for students when they are spelling (because spelling is in the auditory modality).
When introducing short vowel sounds, it is essential to teach these keywords and motions. These cues allow the teacher to provide quick and repeated exposure to the vowel sounds using the same modality (visual cue for reading and auditory cue for spelling) that the student is working in.
