All products in The Multisensory Classroom, including the TMC Phonics Focus Series, are designed to follow Orton Gillingham-based instruction and are derived from my Orton Gillingham Academy-accredited training and my doctoral dissertation research implementing Orton Gillingham in the classroom. They can be used for dyslexia intervention and are differentiated to accommodate the multiple learning styles and abilities of students you may be working with.
This resource includes the following:
- Lesson Plans– Includes two complete lesson plans, one for teaching short-vowel consonant-le words and one for teaching long-vowel (and r-controlled) consonant-le words. These detailed lesson plans lay out from beginning to end how to introduce and teach consonant-le as a syllable type and how to divide consonant-le words into syllables. They also explain how and when to use each product resource during the lesson and include images of each product resource.
- Worksheet
- Word Divide- Students code words and divide them into syllables.
- Scoop. Divide. Cover.- Students scoop words into syllables, re-write by dividing into two syllables, then cover each word and try to write them from memory.
- Posters- Two sets of posters (8 ½ x 11) can be used for classroom display to introduce and practice the skill. Both posters come in color and in black and white.
- Consonant-le Syllable Division Rule Poster– This poster explains the rule for dividing consonant-le words and provides examples.
- Finger Tapping Poster- This poster provides a specific guideline for how to finger tap consonant-le words during reading and spelling.
- Activities
- Consonant-le interactive Notebook- Four activities are included in this product along with a helpful “Overview and Answer Key page”:
- Flip-up activity– Students cut out, glue on the notebook, and write the rule and an example word underneath the flap.
- Cut, match, and paste activity– Students cut out each syllable, match them together to form words, and glue them onto the consonant-le chart along with the pictures that go with each word.
- Foldable activity– Students cut out foldables, color the picture on the front, fold it up, and write the corresponding consonant-le word on the back side.
- Draw and Write activity– Students identify the consonant-le word in each sentence, write and code the consonant-le word on the top, and then draw a picture of the word as used in the sentence.
- Consonant-le Exit Tickets- A quick and easy follow-up assessment to help determine if students understand the consonant-le syllable division pattern; perfect to use in the classroom after the lesson or at the end of a tutoring session.
- Beat the Clock- Once students learn how to divide and decode multisyllable words, they can begin to work on increasing their reading rate of these words. In this activity, students practice reading through a list of words while being timed. Each time they read through the list, they try to beat their previous time. Includes teacher-record forms and data tracking sheets.
- Word Cards- Product includes 100 consonant-le word cards (real and nonsense words) so the lessons can be more individualized to focus on specific words. Includes 2 sets, one with the -Cle in each word underlined and one with the -Cle in red.
