Description
Once students have learned the six syllable types, they are ready for syllable division instruction and practice. This next step teaches them how to break up multisyllable words into smaller syllables and decode them.
This resource provides over 70 pages of practice through a variety of syllable division worksheets and activities using each of the six syllable division patterns:
- VCCV
- VCV
- VCCCV
- VV
- Cle
- Compound Words

Four types of activities are included for each of the six syllable division patterns:
- Word Sorts. Students practice sorting words according to syllable division types. The following syllable division word sorts are included:
- VC/CV, V/CCV, VCC/V
- VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V
- V/CV, VC/V
- VCC/CV, VC/CCV
- Word Divide. Each Word Divide worksheet has the syllable division rule and examples of how to divide words on the sheet (for student reference). These worksheets provide practice in separating multisyllable words into their individual syllables after each syllable division pattern is taught.
- Write and Divide. Students may use this activity in two ways:
- code the word cards, write words on the “Write and Divide” sheet, and separate words into their individual syllables
- use the word cards from several different syllable division patterns to play a matching game. Words with the same syllable division pattern (Ex: VCCV) are a matching pair.
- Scoop. Divide. Cover. Students code each word by marking the vowels and consonants, they scoop the word and then write the first syllable on the first line and the second syllable on the second line. Then, they fold the paper over to cover the word and try to write it from memory.
- Beat the Clock. Once students learn how to divide and decode multisyllable words, they can begin to work on increasing their reading rate of these words. In this activity, students practice reading through a list of words (one word list for each syllable pattern) while being timed. Each time they read through the list, they try to beat their previous time. Teacher record forms are also included.
Answer Keys for all worksheets/activities are also included!
